Registry

An index of producers who make things in New Zealand: not designed here and made elsewhere, but made here.

A producer is listed once we have public evidence, such as the maker’s own statement, a label or a factory, that the work is done in New Zealand. Listing is free, needs no application and carries no obligation. Producers can ask for a correction or removal at any time.

Producers who want more than a listing can apply for certification, or bring a new product to be incubated with us.

Listed

Made in New Zealand, verified from public evidence. Entered by the Institute; the producer does nothing.

No fee.

Certified

An assessment of how and where the work is done, with a site visit. Certified producers may use the Institute’s mark and are reassessed every three years.

By application. Fee scaled to turnover.

Incubated

A new product developed with a producer, from prototype to first run, and introduced through the Institute’s catalogue.

By application. Terms agreed per project.

Certification

Certification asks for more than the place of manufacture. It looks at whether a thing is made to last, whether it can be repaired, and how the people who make it are treated.

What is assessed
Origin	Where each stage of manufacture happens, and how much of the material is from New Zealand.
Durability	Materials and construction chosen for a long working life, and a warranty that stands behind them.
Repair	Spare parts, a repair or restoration service, and instructions that let owners look after the thing themselves.
Work	Pay, conditions and training, including apprentices and the passing on of the trade.
Continuity	How long the product has been made, and the plan for it to go on being made.

Declaration. The producer describes the products to be certified, the sites where they are made, where materials come from, and who does the work.
Assessment. The Institute scores the declaration against the five areas above and asks for evidence where needed.
Visit. We visit the workshop or factory and see the product being made.
Decision. Certification is granted, or deferred with written reasons and what would change the result.
Renewal. A short declaration each year and a full reassessment every three years. Certification lapses if manufacture moves offshore.

Incubation

For a producer with the skill and the plant to make something new, or an old product worth making again. We work on the brief, the prototype and the first production run together, and the finished product is introduced in the catalogue.
